Danny Gatton is probably one of the most versatile musicians to ever pick up a Telecaster. One of the many qualities that made him so special was his ability to cop concepts, grooves, and idiosyncrasies from keyboard players. This was largely due to Gatton’s frequent bandmate, Dick Heintze, who was a master of all styles and a powerhouse pianist. Both Heintze and Danny were always going head to head and pushing each other to the limits of their ability. Anyone who knows Gatton’s playing can hear that he never satisfied being just the guitarist in a band. He was trying to be the pianist, organist, horn section, banjo player and steel guitarist all in the same song. And here's the kicker! It was always musical.

3. This Country chik'n picking lick is inspired by the great Danny Gatton - the Master of the Telecaster. I have heard him play these type of licks quite often on his recordings. I am not sure if he played it this way or not, but this is my way of playing these cool-sounding, quick, chicken picking licks.

This month’s lesson will take a close look at Danny Gatton's boogie-woogie piano grooves on guitar. Boogie-woogie is a style of blues usually played at fast tempos. Its main characteristic is the repetitive bass line. This is usually combined with stabs or soloing in the right hand.
First, let's play the bass figure in the key of A in the open position shown inFig. 1. Use the pick strokes written in the example and make sure to be consistent with them. It will make it easier when we combined this with the stabs in the next example.

InFig. 2we'll add in the chord stabs. I'm using my pinky to barre across the first and second strings at the fifth fret. With your picking hand grab these strings with your middle and ring finger and pluck. It's important not to let these ring. Once you have plucked them release the tension in the pinky so the ringing stops. Go slow and calculate each movement. There's a lot to think about in this one.

Fig. 3is a movable version in the key of D major. I'm going to start by barring my index finger across the fifth fret starting on the fifth string. Then I'm placing my middle finger on the seventh fret fourth string. This frees up my ring and pinky fingers to play the bass line.

Next, we will add the chord stabs. InFig. 4we have the boogie pattern along with the chords on the upper strings. Your barre finger will now have to release tension after the stabs to make sure they don't continue to ring.

Finally, we haveFig. 5, which combines all the examples together to create a cool rhythm part over a blues in the key of A. Although I might sound like a broken record, start each example at a slow tempo in order to internalize the pattern. Once you feel comfortable, increase the tempo and move the pattern around to different keys.

OK, so you want to add some twang, but not TOO much twang. How do you do it? Here’s the absolute, most important, most used, most essential lick in country music.

This country guitar lick has its origins in the folky mountain music. It has been integrated into bluegrass and classic country. Now you’re just as likely to hear this one in a song by the Carter Family, Doc Watson, and Lester Flatt as you are to hear it by James Burton, Brad Paisley and Brent Mason.

The Country Guitar Lick

The first version of the country guitar lick is from Ricky Skaggs. 500 days of summer movie download in hindi 480p. While he is known more for playing the mandolin, he played guitar on a great live album from the early 80s called Live in London.

There are tons of great country guitar/chicken pickin’ moments on this album. The country guitar lick played is over a G chord. The main idea here is moving down the G mixolydian scale, using the flatted third (Bb in this case).

This first version uses pull-offs on the G and D strings to get both the mixolydian scale and the flat third.

The Country Guitar Lick – Version 2

This version comes from Brent Mason on an Alan Jackson song. Mason uses pull-offs from the 6^th of the key to the open string here. He also chromatically leads into the 3^rd at the end.

Check out how he surrounds the B in the last beat of the bar. He plays the C, one half step above the note. Then chromatically leads into the B from the Bb. This is similar to the way jazz players highlight a key note.

The Country Guitar Lick – Version 3

Our final version of the country guitar lick is from a Danny Gatton solo. Gatton was an incredibly fast player and would frequently span all of the American genres in one solo. He starts with a bend from the 5^th of the chord here, then moves to bending the 2^nd of the chord up to the 3^rd. He surrounds the low 3^rd of the chord similar to Brent Mason, but resolves it up to the open G instead of down to the low G.
